Before starting your first Mz3 Project you should find answers on some questions to achieve faster and better results.
Feel free to use the following list as kind of checklist:

  • Collect your media files
Before starting with mz3Tool browse your files and collect all your images, movies, and audio files. The “collection” can happen in different ways:
  • Prepare a list
Create a list (on paper or file) where you make notes about all locations, i.e. the full paths to your data.
You also should kind of sort that list, to give better guidance on what to add first. This is needed if you want to “stack” photos in a certain sequence.
  • Create a dedicated, new folder
Collect, i.e. copy, all media into a new folder; optionally with subfolders (e.g. per media type, “chapter”, …)
  • Rename Files
If your file name (most important for images and sound) already have a useful number embedded in the file name, you can skip this.
Otherwise rename your files and add a number, that indicates the desired sequence. This helps in automatically adding elements (images, audio, …) to pages later (see Page Number from File Name)
You can manually rename the (copied) files. Or make use of special tools performing that action automatically. One such tool is xnview.
  • Create a Link List
If you intend to use links (like ads, social links, …) in your book, you should prepare a link list that summarizes the information:
    • the linked element/text/position together with
    • the correct URL (https:// or http://, mailto:, …)
  • Define Book and Page Parameters
If you do not make use of a PDF file as the base of your book, you must define the page size, number of pages and book type (single or double pages) yourself.
There are many more optional book and page parameters. Although it is helpful and a good idea to make notes about those parameters upfront also, this is not that urgent. You can do it without problems later “on request”.
  • Define the Layout
If images should be added automatically on pages, this is based on a “layout”. The layout defines the number of images per row and the number of columns per page. And with that the size of the book; and eventually the number of pages. So this decision is key for several other parameters.
  • Define the name of your Mz3 Book
This name is used to identify the Mz3 Project. It is also part of must derived folder names.
    • Expected number of versions
If you create a catalog, the year/quarter/month should become part of the name. This also is true for periodicals like magazines or newspapers.
    • Name Structure
Mz3 Project / Book names should follow a unique structure, so they can be identified and found easier.
Will fragments be separated by “_” or “-”? or marked with capital letters?
      Examples: “vacation_greece_2018” or “2018-08-greece” or “vacationGreeceAthens_2018Q3”
    • Multi-Lingual Books??
If you plan books in different languages, you should code the language in the file name following the “rules”:
      • exactly two letters
      • lower case letters only
      • leading “_” character (underscore)
      • the last letters in the file name
        Examples:
        travel2018_en, travel2018_de, travel2018_es
en: English, de: German, es: Spanish
