All selected images are listed in a table. The first image is displayed in the preview area. To check another file/row, simply click into another row.
The file names are already interpreted “best possible”, i.e. numbers are extracted out of the file name and used as image or page numbers and the Page images that could be assigned to page numbers can be immediately added to the book in hitting the button at the very bottom left; usually a green button like:

Table Structure

The table shows the information needed to check the mapping of Page Images -> Pages.
It can be sorted by the last 4 columns. To sort a column, click into the column header of that column. A next click will revert the sort direction.

  • Status
Indicates if a Page Image is used, how the page number was determined or why an image wasn’t used
  • Name of the saved Page Image
The page number is part of the file name and should be checked
  • determined page number
This is the page number assigned to the image (see column “image filename”).
The page number either is extracted from the file name of the provided images (as page or image number) or simply a running index calculated from the sorted grid
  • Extracted Number (sortable)
If not built from the index this shows the number extracted from the file name
This is helpful if special filters are used to get the correct number out of the file name
  • File Name of the selected Page Images (sortable)
  • Modification Date (sortable)
  • Creation Date (sortable)

Supported mapping algorithms

The assignment of page images to page numbers is always first done automatically by mz3Tol. Only if the result is not as expected, the selection can be adjusted manually in selecting a different “logic” or applying filters. This allows e.g. to multiply extracted numbers with an entered value (for a division multiply with values < 1 like 0.1 to dive by 10). With that in most cases, good results are achievable. As a final resort, the file names can be adjusted with external tools like XnView.

Three “logic” options to assign page images to the respective pages are available :

Button Wirkung
The extracted Number becomes the Image Number
The extracted Number becomes the Page Number
The row index becomes the Image Number

Automatic Placement

mz3Tool always attempts to assign the page images to the correct page and is using different strategies for that. If the first strategy fails, i.e. too many page images cannot be placed on pages, the next strategy is tried. Usually, the first attempt is to extract the last number in a file name and use that as an image number. Only if the file name starts with “page” or “Seite”, that number will be interpreted as the page number. If more than 75% of the page images can be placed, the result will be accepted. The next option is setting the overwrite flag. And finally, the sorted list by filename is used; first without overwriting pages, and eventually with overwriting pages.

To avoid an unintended overwrite of existing page images, please check the result carefully before starting the automatic placement of page images on pages!
Bus as you will see: in most cases, everything is just fine and you can accept the proposed selection.

Manual Adjustments
Thre options to try out are available:
  • Option 1+2 (extract number from the file name and use it as image or page number)
If there is a number contained in the file name of the page images, one of these options might be used.
The number is interpreted as page number if the file name starts with either “page” or “Seite”.
Please take the book type (single or double pages) into consideration!
    • Single pages are numbered as: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, …
    • Images placed on double pages use a page sequence like this: 1, 2, 4, 6, …
  • 3rd Option (use sorting)
In most cases, this option is the best choice. The rows should be sorted accordingly, though. Best choices usually are:
    • Increasing for a sort by filename
    • or decreasing for dates

Fine-tuning

If those 3 options do not achieve good results, the advanced options might be of help. It is possible to extract numbers in between other number blocks, strip trailing zeros, do basic calculations.

Row Selection

Usually, the page images of interest are already picked in the File Browser / File Finder. And mz3Tool detects invalid numbers automatically and excludes those images.

The status marks those blocked pages:

If that’s not sufficient, it is possible to just pick the rows that should go into the book with a mouse click, together with the CTRL key pressed.
Another option is to mark a block of rows with a mouse click and a mouse click with SHIFT pressed.

The radio button “selected Rows” is set automatically if more than one row is selected. To use all rows again, the radio button “all Rows” has to be clicked.
Selected rows and the active row (the row used to show the preview image) are marked blue. The count of the selected rows is shon in the “Use Images” bitton (bottom left).
